BML130 Coursework. September 2019 BML130 / Fundamentals of Website Development. Coursework Summary. Part 1, Artefact (website): September 2019 Hand in Date: 17th December 2019. 1pm Requirements Using the techniques learnt in the module, you are required to ‘fix’ a poor website. You will address areas such as: • Non-standard’s compliant or out-dated code • Inefficient code (needless repetition, long file names etc.) • Poorly formed HTML (e.g. styling in tags rather than CSS file) • Poorly optimised images • Areas hindering search engine optimisation and accessibility Deliverables: A three to four page (or equivalent) website. This does not need to be a complete or finished site. Think of it as a prototype, showing how some key elements have been improved to contemporary web standards. Your site will be ‘submitted’ by uploading to the Business School development server. It will not be emailed or uploaded to Moodle. At the submission deadline all uploaded files will be automatically copied to another location. The URL MUST be in the format: http://bsch-YOURUSERNAME.chi.ac.uk/bml130/assignment/ BML130 Coursework. September 2019 e.g https://bsch-rholden.chi.ac.uk/bml130/assignment/ Your home page MUST be named index.htm, index.html or index.php Note Submissions on alternative URLs will be considered non-submission. This URL must be clearly stated at the start of your report (part 2). The candidate website You will choose from one of the following: Site URL Stirlands Cricket Club http://stirlands.play-cricket.com/ Test Temp Ltd http://www.testemp.co.uk/ SPR Centre http://www.sprcentre.com/ If you are in doubt which site to choose, please discuss with the module tutor. Alternative sites are not permitted and will be treated as non- submission. Development brief The development brief for all three sites is to: 1. Make mobile responsive for desktop, tablet and phone 2. Bring the code up to modern standards 3. Achieve 100% W3C standards compliancei (or as near as possible) BML130 Coursework. September 2019 4. Improve the user experience 5. Make the site accessible by those with disabilities or impairments 6. Help the site owner effectively promote their business / sport / club to a specific as well as wider audience. 7. Improve the chances of a higher rating in search engines on appropriate keywords Website minimum requirements To meet the minimum standard your website will: • Work effectively in the latest versions of the main desktop PC web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox). (We do not need to consider Apple Macs for this assessment). • Display adequately (i.e. all the required information is displayed even if there are some minor layout errors or inconsistencies) at desktop, tablet and phone size. (This can be achieved with break points or using Bootstrap for example). There is no minimum for the actual number of break points. • Accessible, as far as possible, for those with impairments or disabilities Marking criteria Assessment criteria explained • Evidence of the application of appropriate standards and techniques to develop the artefact. The “artefact” is the website. There are many ways to build a web site but this assessment is looking for techniques which have been learnt and perfected throughout the module. Marks will be awarded on the basis of the quality and efficiency of the code along with demonstrating a good understanding of development and testing techniques covered throughout the module. Should you wish to use technology or methods not covered in class, please ensure you discuss this with the module tutor well in advance. • Evidence for the allowance of interoperability in development process. BML130 Coursework. September 2019 While “interoperability” does cover cross browser compliance, it also means support across mobile devices. It means functioning effectively on popular devices, responding the device to offer an engaging user experience. Marks will be awarded for creative thinking and appropriate (or innovative) layouts at smaller screen sizes. Marks will not be gained by simply reducing the size or eliminating of page elements purely to make them ‘fit’ smaller screens. • Evidence of attainment of (re)development goal for chosen website in accordance with development brief. The development must be purposeful, not random or arbitrary. The goals for improving the site may differ in emphasis or interpretation, but a clear development strategy to fix definable problems or shortcomings is required. Word limit Word limit equivalent – 1,750. (This does not mean the words on the website). Criteria 1: Weight 30% Evidence of the application of appropriate standards and techniques to develop the artefact Criteria 2: Weight 30% Evidence for the allowance of interoperability in development process 80% and above The site looks and functions like a professional production system. Code quality is of a very high standard with a variety of appropriate techniques used. The user interface and extra functionality all provide an excellent user experience. Very effective / creative use of most / all of the tools / methods explored in class expected. Excellent performance between major browsers (min. 5% market share), up to two prior versions of Microsoft browsers (Edge being the lasted) and main phone and tablet mobile platforms. Well implemented features specific to the platform where appropriate. 70 to 79 The site is built to a high standard with efficient quality code and a good variety of extra functionality. Good performance between major browsers (min. 5% market share), up to one prior version of Microsoft browsers and main phone and tablet mobile platforms. Mobile specific features included. BML130 Coursework. September 2019 Effective / creative use of most methods explored in class expected. 60 to 69 The site structure, code quality logic is of a high standard. The user experience is good and reflects a ‘real’ system. There are still some improvements that could be made or has some omissions. Effective / creative use of some methods explored in class expected. Good performance between major browsers and main mobile platforms but no mobile specific features included. 50 to 59 An attempt was made to improve on the minimum requirements and provide some improvements such code compliance or user experience. Some use of some methods explored in class expected. Good performance between major browsers but lacking differentiation at smaller screen sizes to provide an engaging user experience. 40 to 49 Minimum system requirements met but code is lacking quality and creativity and user experience is poor. Minimal use of methods explored in class. Acceptable operation between major browsers, tablet and phone screen sizes. The content can be accessed but is not optimised for the environment and does not provide an engaging user experience. 30 to 39 The site does not work in a meaningful way or improve upon the original. No effective use of methods explored in class. The site fails to meet any minimum criteria. Issues between major browsers rendering the site unappealing or unusable. BML130 Coursework. September 2019 Below 30 The site fails to meet any minimum criteria. No effective use of methods explored in class. The site fails to adapt to any platforms other than desktop. Criteria 3: Weight 40% Evidence of attainment of (re)development goal for chosen website in accordance with development brief. 80% and above Evidence of a thorough understanding of the development goals and appropriate techniques used with deliverables being met or exceeded. 70 to 79 Evidence of a comprehensive understanding of the development goals and appropriate techniques used with deliverables being met. 60 to 69 Evidence of a good understanding of the development goals and appropriate techniques used with most deliverables being met. 50 to 59 Evidence of a limited und
erstanding of the development goals and appropriate techniques mainly used with some deliverables being met. 40 to 49 Evidence of a basic understanding of the development goals and appropriate techniques rarely used with deliverables only partially met. 30 to 39 Little evidence of an understanding or appreciation of the development goals with poor implementation of techniques with little or no deliverables being met. Below 30 Lack of evidence of an understanding or appreciation of the development goals with no or very poor implementation of techniques with little or no deliverables being met. BML130 Coursework. September 2019 Further details Marks are not awarded on the basis of quantity. There will be many ‘dead’ pages in the site and marks will not be awarded for simply creating more pages. Marks are award on the quality of the solution, not the technology used. The use of frameworks such as Bootstrap, or more advanced CSS techniques such as Flexbox does not automatically mean a higher mark. There is no penalty for sites built completely ‘by hand’ i.e. without the use of frameworks. If you have any queries, it is your responsibility to discuss these with the module tutor well in advance of the hand-in date. No allowance will be made for late submission if your technology fails. If the University technology should be unavailable, then appropriate extensions will be granted with no penalty. BML130 Coursework. September 2019 i https://validator.w3.org/
