KNE240 Reliability Engineering Assignment 2 This assignment weights 10% of your final marks. It is designed to reflect your understanding of reliability engineering principles and methods, and your skills in applying them to problem modelling, analysis, and solving, as well as your written communication capability. The report should be between 5 to 10 pages. It needs to be submitted before the end of study period (18/10/2019 at 5pm) to MyLo. Task List: You should select one task from this list and submit your individual report for it. 1. Choose one engineering system or product that you are familiar with as your investigation target. Examples of such an engineering system include but not limited to a car, a mobile phone, a laptop computer, a domestic appliance, a pair of shoes, etc. Identify the reliability causes and consequences, propose/design appropriate reliability data collection and modelling methods, identify your reliability engineering objectives, compare the difference with or without using the principles and methods studied in KN240 to your investigation design, conduct reliability analysis as much as you can, and propose approaches for reliability improvement. 2. Road safety is a critical issue in reliable driving. The reaction time is one of the most important factors of that. Use the web test at http://www.topendsports.com/testing/reaction-timer.htm to test your reaction time. Based on that test, use safe driving as a case study to identify possible risk factors, propose data collection and modelling methods, develop your response model, and develop your safe driving standard that can be used to ensure a minimum reliability of 99%. 3. If you have a dartboard, you can model the reliability of your combined darting function of your brain and muscle system. Variables of condition may be the distance, time, frequency, wind speed, etc. Design your tests, collect reasonable amount of data, build reliability models based on the techniques we study in KNE240 and conduct analysis. Make suggestions to improvement reliability with reasonable discussion. You can also replace the darting with another type of activity. Assessment criteria Grade(percentage at the criteria) Criteria (weight in report) HD(80-100%) DN(70-79%) CR(60-69%) PP (50-59%) NN (0-49%) Background (20%) Describe the background with life experience and reflect the motivations of investigation/study, completely identify relevant aspects and organise them nicely and attractively Include major aspects and organise them in a logic structure and reflect individual life experience or connections to a background issue. Include major aspects and organise them in a logic structure Include major aspects Missing at least two important aspects in background description Study (40%) Reflect comprehensive consideration of relevant reliability issues, systematic modelling and analysis, and implement plan. Reflect systematic reliability modelling and analysis Correctly reflect satisfactory level of study at at least one major reliability concern Reflect reasonable level of reliability study Missing at least one significant aspect or step in study Discussion and conclusion (30) Comprehensive discussions and conclusions are included with acute comments on reliability improvement Major aspects are discussed and reasonable conclusions are included, proper suggestions to reliability improvement are made Several relevant discussions and conclusions are included. One reasonable suggestion to improve reliability is included. At least one logic conclusion is included. No clearly conclusion can be drawn logically Written communication (10%) All components are organised appropriately and a appropriate level of details to give a nice reading experience. Components are organised logically with proper lengths. The context is organised at proper level of details. Components are organised logically with proper lengths Include introduction and background, study, discussion & conclusion, and reference. Meet page length specification.
